Cheap MOTs
Articles - Guides
Written by Gavin Chapman

This is one that came to me in an email from MoneySavingExpert. If your car is due for an MOT, and you want to save money, go to a council run MOT centre!

For cars with faults the MOT test fee is usually dwarfed by repair costs. While a cheap "MOTs just £20" promotion sounds good, it's ruined for those shelling out £1,500 to get problems fixed. Worse still, a few dodgy garages fail components that'd pass elsewhere to generate business.

The key is using hidden local council MOT centres, which don't do repairs, so there's no vested interest to fail you. This is a step by step cheap MOT guide including a full council tst center listing.

I've just added a rather nifty tool to my website. It lets the petroleum obsessed track their MPG easily.

http://onsmart.co.uk/mpg/

You can sign up and register up to 10 cars, track their MPG, and I'll be adding more features in the future, like graphs, and seeing how your car stacks up against others of the same engine capacity etc.

How Does The Smart Car Work
The Smart Cars life began in 1993, when Mercedes-Benz began studies on subcompact car design - the original concept was for a car that was easy to drive, quick and simple to park, with it`s length allowing it to squeeze into tight city spaces. The Smart car range features several compact models and, in no small part due to its overtly funky style, has become iconic in some circles. To illustrate the compact dimensions of the range, the "Fortwo" is just 8ft 2.5 inches long, about 5ft tall and less than 5ft wide. In some situations, a Smart car owner may not need to parallel park in line with other parked cars, rather he or she can simply can back up to the curb. Some claim that two or perhaps even three Smart cars are able to park in that way in a larger than average single parking space.

I hope you regularly check your smart car's oil. If you don't, you should at least once per week, and if it uses more than 1 litre every 1000km (600 miles), you may have a problem, infact, you have definately got a problem! Read on for more information on what to check and try if your smart car is using excessive oil. (Picture courtesy of Flikr some rights reserved )
