Cheap MOTs PDF Print
Written by Gavin Chapman
Wednesday, 01 October 2008

This is one that came to me in an email from MoneySavingExpert. If your car is due for an MOT, and you want to save money, go to a council run MOT centre!

For cars with faults the MOT test fee is usually dwarfed by repair costs. While a cheap "MOTs just £20" promotion sounds good, it's ruined for those shelling out £1,500 to get problems fixed. Worse still, a few dodgy garages fail components that'd pass elsewhere to generate business.

The key is using hidden local council MOT centres, which don't do repairs, so there's no vested interest to fail you. This is a step by step cheap MOT guide including a full council tst center listing.

If your car is an older smart fortwo or roadster, and you have some oil usage problems, it might not be a bad idea to check for leaks, one of the more common leakage points is the dipstick tube seal. You cannot buy this seal by itself, it comes as part of the dipstick tube assembly. I will show you how to change your dipstick tube, it's a 10 minute job, and can be done with all panels still on the car.
